Decision-Making

Lazy consent decision-making.

Lazy consent means that you do not need a specific percentage of people to vote on a matter for the result to be valid. Silence is the equivalent to supporting a decision. Attention: we are using consent, not consensus, meaning that if you vote yes, that may not mean you necessarily agree, but you can live with the decision and don’t veto it.

  1. Members can use their discretion to use lazy consent, which is the equivalent of an affirmative vote.

  2. However, certain proposals can be flagged for mandatory active voting, when the proposer believes that the decision will have a large impact on the network and requires special attention.

  3. Unless the particular proposal is flagged for this mandatory active voting, lazy consent is the standard.

  4. The election of new stewards is a vote that requires mandatory voting by all stewards.

Decision-making tool: Loomio

Formal decisions are made using a software tool called Loomio.

Loomio helps groups make collective decisions using constructive deliberation. This process is based on the principle that diverse perspectives can be synthesised to achieve better solutions that work for more people. While making use of other channels (online and offline) to enrich input into a decision is strongly encouraged, the results on Loomio are considered the official outcome. This is so that we can keep a clear record and archive, and to ensure that everyone who desires to participate in a given decision-making process has the opportunity to make their voice heard. Not every Loomio proposal constitutes a formal decision. Many Loomio proposals are created simply to gauge interest or share information.

When can decisions be made?

Decisions can be made anytime when needed, at bi-annual meetings and electronically on Loomio.

In-person meetings:

  • 1 meeting before / after the Interregional Meeting

  • 1 other meeting throughout the year

When does a decision need to include input from the regions?

  • It is up to each steward to judge when it is necessary

  • Leave sufficient time for regions to engage when asking for input
